The Mustangs of Las Colinas

Hands have been used as a unit of length since ancient Egyptian times, and horses have been measured by this archaic unit since the Middle Ages. It was the hands of artist and sculptor Robert Glenn that masterfully and patiently created The Mustangs of Las Colinas—a lively, powerful display that took eight and a half years to sculpt and install. The art was conceptualized and created before the plaza itself was designed and built, so the sculptures became an inspirational centerpiece of the architecture that went up around them. Today, the horses continue to be molded, bit by bit, as awestruck visitors often put their hands on them in an effort to feel the strength and wild beauty of these larger-than-life animals.

So it’s befitting that these grand creatures—measured by hand, created by hand, and changed by each person who touches them—are the focus and creative source for this health center. Fittingly, Crossover also relies on the vital, enduring human connection—deliver exceptional care, create wellness plans, measure health outcomes, and impact each life that walks through our doors. Our efforts – when combined with each member’s active participation – creates its own health masterpiece with that captures the creativity, energy, and passion of each members unique health journey. CHOCTAW
The Choctaw Indian pony is an extremely rare breed with a long history. These strong, bright, calm horses were wild, but had an affinity for people, and they followed the Choctaw tribe for hundreds of years. Measuring 13 to 14 hands high, the Pinto-colored ponies were relied upon for hunting, and their unusually durable hooves carried them easily across the rocky terrain of Oklahoma. The faithful Choctaw pony’s walked with their tribe during The Trail of Tears forced march where many of them perished along the way.

PRYOR MOUNTAIN
The Pryor Mountain Mustang is a genetically diverse herd with very little inbreeding. A direct descendant of the Spanish Colonial horses, this unique breed is protected by the Wild Horses and Burros Act of 1971. They feature a V-shaped face, narrow and deep chests, and a low-set tail. The most common base color of this breed is referred to as a “linebacked dun”, and this color features a genetic trait called the dun allele, which lightens the coat and adds primitive stripes and bars to the horse’s back, leg, or face.

KIGER
Bold and athletic, the Kiger Mustang has a strong, muscled appearance but a calm, gentle demeanor. They are generally dun in color, and stand between 13 to 15 hands high. A mainstream example of this Spanish Colonial descendant is the character featured in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The artist who created that animated horse used a Kiger Mustang named Donner as his model. Originally found in southeastern Oregon, this breed has also been used as a model for the Breyer series horses, a popular toy with realistic depictions.

CERBAT
Descended from Colonial Spanish horses, the Cerbat Mustang was brought to “New Spain” (US Southwest) in the 16th century with herds becoming well established by the mid-1800’s. A classic Andalusian type, Cerbat’s generally measure 14 to 15 hands high and weigh up to 800 pounds. They are most commonly bay or roan in color, and frequently have white markings on their legs and heads. Cerbat’s are intelligent, calm, and quiet, and have been used for trail riding, ranch work, and Western competition.

CAYUSE
Although the history of the Cayuse Indian pony is obscure, there is a consensus that this distinct breed descended from a French horse called the Percheron. A heavy, stocky pony, the Cayuse was initially brought to Canada and eventually ended up in the U.S. Crossbreeding with Spanish horses to produce a highly colorful lineage—including the Appaloosa, Paint, and Pinto horses. While initially quite plentiful along their natural range, there are only a handful of these breed still in existence today.

CHICKASAW
The earliest cowboys in Florida were known for their sharp use of whips; nicknamed “crackers,” it stands to reason that this Spanish-bred pony was called the Florida Cracker horse. Mainly found in roan, gray, and black, these beasts were agile and strong, and made excellent working horses. Between 1930-1940 (the Dust Bowl years), larger Western cattle were brought into Florida. Because Chickasaws were bred to drive smaller cattle, they were ultimately replaced by American Quarter Horses.

SPANISH BARB
Prior to 1492, Spain was occupied by Northern Africa, which brought warrior horsemen astride a horse species called the African Barb. These horses were crossbred with the existing Spanish horses and were prized for both their grace as well as hardiness and endurance. Later, the horse was introduced in South America, Mexico, and ultimately to North America. American Indians used this breed extensively but with the continued westward expansion the breed was pushed to near extinction by crossbreeding and conflict.

SORRAIA
This rare, primitive breed is thought to be indigenous to the Sorraia river basin, found on the Iberian peninsula. It has a large head, long ears, and good endurance. Sorraia Mustangs are usually dun, and like the Pryor Mountain Mustang, often has primitive markings like stripes and a dark muzzle. Sorraia newborn foals often have a zebra-like appearance, called “hair stroke.” These patterns are recognizable between many of theNorth and South American horse breeds indicating heavy cross breeding over time.

BAYS
One of the most common coat colors, a bay horse is characterized by a black mane and tail, black lower legs, black ear tips, and a brown body. The black areas of a bay horse are called “black points” and must be in place for the horse to be considered a true bay. The brown bodies range from blood red to mahogany, and the skin is black, except under markings, where the skin is pink. Chestnuts and Black horses are often mistaken for bays, though they are lacking the distinguishing “black points” and light eyelashes of a true bay.

CHESTNUTS
Another familiar coat color of horses, chestnuts generally have a reddish-brown color with either a matching or slightly lighter tail and mane. While chestnut itself is considered a “base” color and has multiple variations, a true “chestnut” horse can be lighter or darker but always characterized by an absence of black hair. Visually, the wide variety of chestnut shades range from almost black to reds to golden (described as Sorrel, Liver Chestnut, Flaxen Chestnut, etc) although genetically they are all similar species.

DUNS
The term “dun” refers to a dilution gene that affects the base color of a horse’s coat—it lightens and creates wide pattern variations on the body but leaves the mane, legs, face, and primitive markings the original base color. Chestnut horses that have the dun gene are a buckskin color; black horses with the gene are a steel gray. All horses with the dun gene are distinguishable by a dark dorsal stripe down the center of its back which can occasionally manifest as horizontal striping on the front legs or “cobwebbing” marks on the face.

OVERO
The word “overo” is Spanish and means “like an egg.” It refers to the American Paint Horses with white markings, and there are three main variations: frame, savino, and splashed white. Frame overos are the most common, with uneven, horizontal marks across the belly, a white face, and often, blue eyes. Savino overo horses have white “stockings” unevenly up the legs and white speckled markings on the underbelly. The splashed white, true to its name, has markings like it ran across a white river and is prone to being deaf.

The American locomotive is credited with changing the steam locomotive industry given its increased power and tractive effort. The 4-4-0 wheel configuration, developed by Henry Campbell, proved to be superior to all other trains at the time. Many of the standard features of the American—like a smoke stack situated at 90° and an enclosed cab for train crew safety—became common fixtures on future locomotive models.

AMERICAN PAINT
Multiple American Paint horses were featured in the movie Hidalgo, which told a dramatic version of the Frank T. Hopkins story and his namesake mustang. Hopkins and Hidalgo were known as the “world’s greatest endurance horse and rider” after completing an epic 3,000 mile “Ocean of Fire” race across the Najd desert region. The film featured Viggo Mortenson playing Hopkins (leveraging his Lord of the Rings horsemanship skills) who later purchased one of the horses in the movie for his private ranch in Idaho.

Born to a mother who bred horses and a father who trained them, Elisa Wallace was destined for a career in show horsing. After she became a five-star, advanced event rider, Elisa was matched with the Mustang she later named Hwin when competing in a “Mustang Magic” event. She learned quickly that this big-hearted, athletic animal loves to jump, compete, and win. Elisa bonded with Hwin, and became an ambassador for Mustangs, showing horse enthusiasts that their versatility wasn’t just for cowboys on the range.

GRAY ROAN
Roan is a horse coat color pattern characterized by an even mixture of colored and white hairs on the body, while the head and "points"—lower legs, mane and tail—are mostly solid-colored. Horses with roan coats have white hairs evenly intermingled throughout any other color. The head, legs, mane and tail have fewer scattered white hairs or none at all. The roan pattern is dominantly-inherited, causing the coat may lighten or darken from winter to summer, but does not become progressively lighter in color as they age.
