Route 66 Rendezvous

America’s love affair with automobiles and Route 66 has endured the test of time. While the historic highway was officially decommissioned in 1985, the memory lives on in the imagination of car enthusiasts worldwide. Events across the country are held every year in celebration of those glory days—and the classic cars that cruised the route—and people young and old gather to share their passion for these restored relics. From bright chrome and whitewalls to muscle cars and hot rods, the vintage automobile is a classic American icon. After World War II, cars sold almost as fast as they were produced. Today, those trucks, sedans, and coupes are polished, customized, and cherished by aficionados who have a soft spot for a time when things were designed to inspire and built to last. People devote time and energy to transforming these “mod” vehicles until they are true individual expressions of self. At Crossover, we honor the traditions of Route 66, and celebrate the innovations that have taken place since that time. We have looked under the hood of healthcare, inspected what existed, and modified it to our liking—all for our members’ wellbeing. We take great pride in the way we have redesigned a new route to good health. Though our industry is different, we also view what we do as not only an expression of our vision, but a vehicle for others to take into the future of healthcare. Enjoy the journey.

Bel Air
1955 BOTTOMLESS BEL AIR
In expansive Los Angeles, used cars had initially been bought and stripped for racing, but after WWII, the need for speed changed—slow and low was the goal. California code prohibited any part of a car going below the rim, so hydraulics were attached to raise (and lower again) as needed. The ground-skimming Bel Air with its long, low body was a classic choice to create lowrider envy.
Bug
1959 BURGUNDY BUG
The VW Beetle quickly became a global pop culture icon—it graces the Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover, and was the star of a Disney TV show. The “people’s car” also had a revolutionary impact on the automotive industry, as it was affordable, practical, stylish, and could be produced en masse. Bug devotees favored the add-on of whitewall tires, and fans have given it a rainbow of bold body paint.
Cadillac
PERFECTLY PINK CADILLAC
From front and rear bullet grilles, to rocket-shaped body flanks, to the industry’s tallest tailfins, to insane bullet-shaped tail lamps, there was no car as wild as the 1959 Cadillac. The new model had a distinctive roofline, new jewel-like grille, and of course the 325 horsepower 6.4L engine. Modsters immediately took to the “wood rose metallic” color and the “Pink Cadillac” of Bruce Springsteen fame was born.
Camaro
RACE READY CAMARO
You could argue that the 1969 Camaro ZL1 was the most valuable production Camaro ever. The Muncie "Rock Crusher" four-speed manual transmission was powered by an all-aluminum 6.8-liter big-block engine rated at 430 horsepower. But it wasn’t just a dream car for racers, it also could be styled to meet the main street drag scene as well. This mod was decked out in orange leather to match its prominent hood stripes.
Chevy
BABY BLUE ‘57 CHEVY
The 1950’s were defined by groundbreaking design, food, and music—and an unparalleled car culture. So much of what was born in that decade was often wrapped in the pastel palette that dominated the era—including the classic cars. Baby blue was popular on everything from kitchen counters to the ‘57 Chevy, and many of the popular mods were complemented by whitewall tires and white roof accents.
Continental
CLEAN CONTINENTAL
The Lincoln Continental has been in production for nearly 70 years, but the early sixties models were intended to bring the car back into mainstream consciousness. The convertible model, with sleek straight lines and suicide doors, perfectly fit the bill. The modification to the all-white body, blue interior, and complementary whitewalls was considered “stone cold” for the 2014 movie “Swelter.”
Coupe
1949 CUNNING COUPE
When WWII ended, the car industry boomed—delayed consumerism reached an all-time high and cars were selling as fast as they could be made. By 1949, consumers were ready for something new, and Motor City delivered in a big way with the new Coupes. With a bold engine casing that flowingly swooped in the tail, the cunning temptress boosted sales and reinvigorated Ford as an auto innovator.
Firebird
FORMIDABLE FIREBIRD
The early 1970s were challenging for muscle cars newly subject to emerging emissions standards, the high cost of gasoline, and expensive insurance. Pontiac engineers were able to work around this with the new Super Duty 455 engine and the Rochester quadrajet carburetor that delivered a mean 350 horsepower. The iconic white Firebird, set off against the glossy black hood, made this mod formidable.
Fleetwood
1936 MAJESTIC FLEETWOOD
Motor City’s climb out of the Great Depression was a slow one. Sales were at a high in the late 1920s, but they wouldn’t see another peak in sales until 1949. The 1936 Cadillac Fleetwood was GM’s first concept car that would later go into production. The v16 motor engine, turret top roof, recessed and lit license plates, and a fuel port set in the tail light housing were some innovation firsts.
Ford
STEALTHY ‘53 FORD
Ford’s ‘53 pickup has a cult following that rivals the VW Beetle. The cab was designed as a driver’s dream, but hot rodders have claimed the F100 as their darling for decades. The broader front end body makes it look even more massive than before, and aficionados have chromed, lowered, chopped, engine-swapped and otherwise customized this truck to their heart’s content.
Hornet
HUDSON HORNET
One of the first automakers to embrace racing as a core part of their marketing strategy, Hudson-backed racing teams became the darlings of the circuit accounting for 108 victories in three short years. Hudson’s low center of mass, light body weight, great handling, and five-litre, six-cylinder engine (H-145) soon earned the car the adjective “Fabulous” by racecar drivers and industry reputation alike.
Mercury
MIDNIGHT MERCURY
The Mercury division of Ford operated between 1939 and 1951. The car was offered as a coupe, sedan, convertible, and station wagon during its production runs. The Hirohata Merc, along with the midnight variations, had a momentous effect on the style and attitude of this era, earning it an honorable mention on the Rod & Customs 20 Best Customs of All Time list.
Mustang
1965 BURNIN’ MUSTANG
The Mustang wasn’t originally named for the wild horse who adorns each hood—it was named for the best American fighter plane of WWII, the reliable and powerful P-51 Mustang. But as far as custom paint jobs go, the meaning behind the flames that became popular in the 1950s is clear. Whether long lick seaweed, or crab claw style, they universally scream hot, fast, and fun.
Roadmaster
RARE ROADMASTER
The Buick designers held nothing back for the last class ‘53 Roadmaster including the bombsight hood ornament, flashing piston lights, curved glass windshield, and the full body length sweepspear. This observation car was also outfitted with a “Twin-Turbine” Dynaflow V-8 engine. Not only did drivers feel like a soaring fighter pilot, but the elegant styling and turquoise blue body paint created a sense of rarified air.
Thunderbird
STUNNING THUNDERBIRD
Ford unveiled the Thunderbird at the Detroit Auto Show in 1954. Not only did it fly off the showroom floor, but it could fly down the highway as well, at speeds up to 115 mph. The T-bird’s tight steel body, with smooth, clean, youthful lines, and rakish long hood echoed the style of this era. The two-seater became very popular and was often used in TV shows, movies, advertisements—and even had its own US postage stamp.
Torpedo
1948 ELUSIVE TORPEDO
A rare gem, the Torpedo was created by the Maverick automaker Preston Tucker who was attempting to outflank the big three automakers. The several “big leap” conceptual innovations in the engine, body type, sleek body, and roomy interior proved a bit ahead of production and distribution realities. Embroiled in controversy, only 51 of the Torpedos were ever produced, making them elusive, indeed!
Willy
RUGGED WILLY
Not as well known as its Jeep cousin, the Willy was known as a freedom vehicle given its versatility, rugged appearance, four-wheel drive, and Super Hurricane engine. The famed V-shaped grill, along with the extended truck carriage and side wheel, gave this mod its unique two-toned look. Willys were attractive to farmers, ranchers, and adventurers who were comfortable and confident in the great American outdoors.
Woody
BEACH BOUND WOODY
The Woody is a general description of a car that has extensive rear bodywork modifications done in various forms of wood. Originally for structural support, but later for styling, the wood gave the multi-purpose vehicles a unique appearance. Woodys were further popularized by the Beach Boys’ song Surfing Safari which became synonymous with the growing California surf culture and beach scene.
