Colors of Seattle

Dubbed the Emerald City thanks to its lush, evergreen landscape, Seattle is flanked by the Puget Sound and Lakes Washington and Union. CAPITAL HILL
Over the decades, Capitol Hill has been many things, including an arts and entertainment hub. And now this burgeoning counterculture hub has become a comfortable nest for the LQBTQIA+ community—its eleven rainbow crosswalks throughout the neighborhood invite a diverse blend of residents and visitors to explore. In this piece, an abstract rainbow design that reflects the welcoming painted paths in the neighborhood leads upwards to the top of “the hill,” where you will find a view of the mountains that surround Seattle.

WEST SEATTLE
This vintage postcard-inspired piece celebrates both the contemporary and the past, highlighting some of the numerous significant historical sites that are found throughout Seattle’s oldest neighborhood. Its saltwater beaches were the first landing of colonial settlers to the area. At Alki Beach, the settlers discovered the generosity of the Duwamish, an Indigenous tribe led by Chief Seattle, who helped them build a cabin to stave off the cold, wet winter during a very large storm.

QUEEN ANNE
Lower Queen Anne is on the edge of the north and west sides of Seattle’s center, where you find your everyday tourist marveling at the art venues (like MoPOP, Pacific NW Ballet, and Chihuly Glass), the infamous Space Needle, and gardens. For the locals, it’s home to KEXP, a listener-supported radio station, which broadcasts on the FM dial at 90.3 and produces hundreds of free live performances each year. The soundwaves behind the photo collage are actually the visual amplitude of the words “Crossover Seattle.”
Seattle_SODO-Track
SODO TRACK
Seattle’s SODO (South of Downtown) Track has transformed the portal to Downtown Seattle—a two-mile transit corridor traveled by over 50,000 people daily—into an imaginative raceway of motion, color, and inspiration. This graphic piece mirrors the wave-like stripes on the Sound Transit Link light rail’s exterior and places it in the art, as if the art was a mirror as the train sped by. What was once industrial and gray is now an entrance to the burst of creativity found in 60 murals. One of the murals, by art duo, CYRCLE, recalls, “Then Out Came The Sun,” to literally remind on-lookers, for a stretch of 275 feet, that today is bright.
Seattle_Leschi
LESCHI
Leschi is a real neighborhood on the western shore of Lake Washington, unlike what is depicted in this piece of storybook homes that might be found in a Mary Blair painting. This close-knit community of curvy streets and lake views bears the name of Chief Leschi who was executed for defending the land and life of his people, the Nisqually. This digital display of the lake-level view facing west reveals in the distance the Olympic mountain range, the region’s guardian and protector. In the foreground you’ll find an eclectic patchwork of homes sharing their small world.

INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT
The International District brings together history, the quirky, and the utterly individual—from a century-old Japanese restaurant to the city’s oldest Chinese restaurant. This piece of art embodies simplicity and highlights the cultures celebrated in the community. And like the subtle flare and charm of the Asian-American communities, historical and cultural items are photographed and placed in a monochromatic palette, giving the viewer elements of surprise as they study this piece beyond the pink umbrella.

LAKE UNION
There’s a lot to look at in this South Lake Union wonderland. There’s the “Umbrella Man,” Robert W. Patten, who lived on a floating home and would sport his handmade miniature umbrella hat while he “predicted the weather” to anyone who would listen. Amazon's The Spheres are three spherical conservatories which house work and meeting spaces and plant biodiversity from around the world. South Lake Union is home to the once endangered, now protected, peregrine falcon. The lake is also a hub to two seaplane bases. Smaller treasures in this piece feature year-round inhabitants including the mallard duck, as well as migratory salmon and steelhead trout.

UNIVERSITY DISTRICT
University District brings the energetic buzz of a college town to the many neighborhoods surrounding it. This piece brings you on campus, front and center, to the 99-year-old Suzzallo Library building. This library serves as the architectural anchor and cultural center for many nearby towns. This imaginative digital illustration created on an iPad leaves your mind clear and your senses calm so that the possibilities can be left to your own imagination.
Seattle_Downtown
DOWNTOWN
The long stretch of public art is hard to miss when strolling the coastline of Seattle. Just north of the ferryways into downtown sits nine acres of public art sculptures as an outdoor offshoot of the Seattle Art Museum. This digital piece takes the angles and features of those outdoor art sculptures and creates Artdoor Out, a futuristic assemblage of color and shape, accentuating the triangular park and mimicking the edges of many sculptures dotting the area.
Seattle_Georgetown
GEORGETOWN
The historic Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle is home to Hat ‘n’ Boots, a landmark in Oxbow Park. The quirky monument was originally built in 1954 as part of a Western-themed gas station, and is the largest hat and cowboy boots in America. This collage is made of all sorts of paper, from scrap music sheet and wallpaper to printed scrap and hand-painted papers including alcohol inks on synthetic material. The collage is framed with a watercolor streak of green which compliments the manicured grass areas within the park.
