Big Tex

The State Fair of Texas first opened its gates in 1886, and has been a global attraction for visitors every year since then, with few exceptions—the Fair was closed at varying times during World Wars I and II, and the fair was cancelled altogether this year (2020) due to COVID-19. Traditionally open for 24 consecutive days beginning at the end of September—making it the longest running fair in the country—State Fair highlights include an opening day parade, light show, agricultural displays, music, dance performances, a car show, and butter sculptures. There are also several animal encounters including a livestock birthing barn, pig races, and a cow milking demonstration. Deep-fried foods are a mainstay, with everything from cookies to bacon being battered, fried, and consumed by the more than 1.5 million guests who attend each year. Since 1952, visitors have been greeted by the world’s tallest cowboy—Big Tex. He stands 55’ tall and with his gigantic hinged jaw, he is able to “speak” welcoming messages to people as they enter the fair. From family fun to football—and just about everything in between—the State Fair celebrates all things Texas, and is proud to be an integral part of the community. Crossover feels lucky to be in this great state as well, serving the gracious people and celebrating the deep traditions that have endured the test of time. Most importantly, we look forward to getting to know your past, and helping you prepare for a healthy future. Come on in, y’all!
